A game rip (or gamerip) refers to a pirated version of a game that was stripped down in order to fit under scene rules. This is largely a historical artifact of The Scene since no size limits exist today and releases are generally made in their entirety as disc images.

History

Game ripping reached its zenith in the 1990s, during the transition from floppy disks to CD-ROM as the predominant removable storage medium. While CD-ROMs offered vastly increased storage capacity, the growth in network speed was relatively slow in coming. Games of that era, such as Doom, were typically 10–20 MB in size before the adoption of the CD-ROM gave rise to a sudden explosion to 650 MB through the arbitrary inclusion of redbook audio and full-motion video to take advantage of the storage capacity. The most basic rips simply removed Redbook audio and blanked video files, stripping games back down to sizes that were feasible for distribution over 28.8k dialup connections.

With time, and the advent of 3D graphics, actual game content began to take over more of the disc space, as better hardware prompted higher resolution graphics and sound. As network speeds began to increase with 56k dialup and early broadband, the scene responded by revising its rules to allow for larger releases. However, ripping was still more difficult due to ever-increasing sizes of game assets. Towards the end of the game ripping era, releases were often distributed with MP3 audio in order to meet release rules, but after downloading, the files would then have to be backsampled to the raw formats the game actually used (e.g. WAV).

With the rise of broadband internet across large parts of the world, releases of multiple CD and DVD sized games become a feasible process and the images provided by groups were in fact direct copies of the original CD image, usually with copy protection bypassing tools supplied either as part of the image or in a separate archive. The proliferation of BitTorrent has aided in distribution of scene releases, though past methods such as Usenet and transfer over DCC protocols remain common as well.

Despite this, ripped and/or repacked versions of video games are still in demand especially with users who have slower connections - as certain games such as Grand Theft Auto IV, L.A. Noire, and a few others take up more than 10 GB of space, and, as a consequence, take longer to download.

HOW TO INSTALL DOWNLOADED PC GAMES (A General Guide )

Ok, you have successfully downloaded a game from the internet..but are clueless as to what to do next. This guide is designed as a staring point to get you up to speed on the terminology and process behind installing a cracked game. However, this guide may not be suitable for all downloaded games so if after reading it you are still none the wiser as to what to do, just ask for help.

NB - The first thing you should do is copy the entire download and move it somewhere safe to have as backup if things go wrong!

Note: Recently uploaders have begun releasing "Direct Play" games. Direct Play games are straight forward to install and play. Just read the .txt or .nfo file included with the game download. Non Direct Play games are more difficult to install and this guide is designed to offer you a little help.

Anyway on to the game... Your download should look something like this:

MAIN FOLDER

- Game Folder
.............Contains all the files needed to install the game. (May be in the form of a CD/DVD image file)
.............May contain a help file .txt or .nfo

- Crack Folder
.............Will contain the No CD crack
.............May contain a help file .txt or .nfo

Next lets get familiarised with some file types you may come accross.

2. FILE TYPES

ARCHIVES

Example: .rar .zip .ace .r01 .r02 .001 .002
These extensions tell that the actual data you downloaded is compressed into an "archive".This is a way of making the files more compact and easier to download.In order to access the data in the archive, you have to extract the archive.You can extract any of the archives listed above with the program

CD/DVD image files

.bin/.cue
If you have gotten .BIN and .CUE files, then you have obtained a CD Image, or Images. The BIN file is basically an entire CD in one file, and the CUE file stores information on the .BIN file that is needed when burning, or mounting to a virtual CD drive. These are your standard images of a CD or DVD, and are used quite alot these days.

To open them you have a couple options. You can burn them using Nero or

http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/announcements.php, which lets you mount the image to a "virtual CD/DVD-rom", so basically it tricks your computer into thinking that you inserted the disk into your CD/DVD drive. Alcohol 120% also sports a virtual cd-rom feature. Please note that if you decide to mount the file you use the .CUE file.

Finally, if you're still struggling to access the files contained within any given image file you can use

.iso
A type of image file that follows similar rules as .bin and .cue, only you extract or create them using

http://www.isobuster.com/. Sometimes converting a problematic .bin and .cue file to an .iso can help you burn it to a CD or DVD.

.ccd .img .sub
All these files go together and are in the

OTHER files

.txt/.doc
These are text files. .txt files can be opened with notepad or watever you default text editor happens to be, and .doc are opened with Microsoft Word.

.nfo
These contain information about the file you just downloaded, and it's HIGHLY recommended that you read these! They are plain text files, often with ascii-art. You can open them with Notepad, Wordpad,

.exe

EXE is the common filename extension for denoting an executable file (a program) in the OpenVMS, DOS, Microsoft Windows, ReactOS, and OS/2 operating systems. Besides the executable program itself, many EXE files contain other components called resources, such as bitmaps and icons which the executable program may use for its graphical user interface.

Now that you have an idea what your looking at lets begin installing the game.


3. LOOKING FOR INCLUDED INSTRUCTIONS

Your download will more than likely include instructions contained in a .txt or .nfo file as described above. Please read these instructions carefully. If your download doesn't include instructions don't worry it should still be straight forward enough. A great place to get help on installing your game is the comments section of the page where you downloaded the Games.


4. FINDING THE IMAGE FILE

Your Image file is the main file in the download. If you do not have software for dealing with Image files the file icon may look like a movie icon, WinRAR icon, default icon etc. If you are unsure, right click on the file and go to Properties and check.

Some uploaders divide the Image file into WinRAR archives like so (.r01 .r02 r.03 or .001 .002...) To extract the Image file you right click on the first .rar file and select "extract here". WinRAR will automatically extract the Image from the .rar files.

5. INSTALLING THE GAME

-Unrar / ekstract / Join the downloadable file.
-Run Setup.bat/install.bat/unpack.bat/Game.bat or other files with .bat extension.
-Please wait decompress command prompt (dont stop this process)
-Copy crack/insert serial number/ other
-Enjoy the games

Depending on how you want to install the game you can either extract the Image file using WinISO or ISOBuster or mount the Image file using
